Under the thin tapestry of stars, a hot wind carves my right cheek - surfacing my restlessness, and more than gently guiding my face to the other direction. my stone eyes are pulled to the horizon, where i rest my gaze for a thousand moments. i stand here contemplating what it feels like to vanish into light again.

i begin to write to you with simplicity, tracing letters in the air with my fingers. one word a night. one word for every discarnate black sun that i am carried off with.

āftāb - you and i suspended in an unending dance reuniting between distant future and impending past. in this unending dance, we remind each other that words will always be a means of:

running from

and

running to.

in this dance, you and i obfuscate - in order to lay bare - only to obfuscate again. one word a night.

somewhere beyond my restlessness i am tracing letters on the roof of my mouth with my sharpened tongue:

you, an expert at decay and propagation, fervently and fluidly injecting your flames along the retina of time.

and i, a reverent servant to ritual, a delegate of transmutation.

under the thin tapestry of night, a hot breeze blows along my breast. my stone eyes fall past these bright shadows, onto flesh roses strewn about.

one for desire, one for longing.

one for foresight, one for gut.

one for resilience, one for self-preservation

one for rage, one for delicacy.

i wonder who you will be when you realise that the moments in which we coil and converge will be something of a waning memory, though i carry on inside of you and you inside of me despite the fires that go out.

my stone eyes are pulled from the horizon, where i softly lay my gaze while the sound of a thousand crescendos surface restlessness within me. you remain beyond me contemplating what it would feel like to take cover in blankets of obsidian, and i contemplate what solar wounds would taste like.

until then, we will keep unraveling towards each other: one word after the other.

زير گلدوزي نازك ستارگان، يك باد داغ گونه ي راستم را تراش مي دهد – بي قراري ام را بيشتر مي كند و صورتم را به مسيري ديگر هدايت مي كند. چشم هاي سنگي ام به سمت افق كشيده مي شوند، جايي كه نگاهم براي هزار لحظه مي ماند. من اينجا مي ايستم در حال فكر كردن به اينكه غيب شدن در نور دوباره چه احساسي دارد.

من شروع مي كنم و با سادگي به تو مي نويسم، كلمه ها را با انگشتانم در هوا دنبال مي كنم. هر شب يك كلمه. يك كلمه براي هر خورشيد سياه اثيري كه مرا با خود مي برد.

آفتاب – تو و من معلق در رقصي بي پايان كه آينده ي دور را به گذشته ي نزديك پيوند مي زند. در اين رقص بي پايان، ما به يكديگر ياد آوري مي كنيم كه كلمات هميشه وسيله اي براي:

فرار كردن از

و

فرار كردن به

خواهد بود.

در اين رقص، من و تو محو مي شويم كه عريان شويم فقط براي اينكه دوباره محو شويم.

شبي يك كلمه

جايي فراي بي قراري ام من با زبان تيزم حروف را روي سقف دهانم مي نويسم:

تو متخصص پوسيدن و پخش شدن، با اشتياق و راحتي شعله هايت را در چشم زمان تزريق مي كني.

و من يك خدمتكار با احترام به مراسم، نماينده ي تحول

زير گلدوزي نازك شب، يك نسيم داغ در كنار سينه ام مي دمد. چشم هاي سنگي ام از اين سايه ي درخشان عبور مي كنند و به رزهاي گوشتي مي رسند.

يكي براي ميل يكي براي تمنا

يكي براي آينده نگري يكي براي دل

يكي براي قدرت يكي براي مراقبت از خويش

يكي براي خشم يكي براي ظرافت

مي انديشم چه كسي خواهي بود وقتي دريابي كه لحظاتي كه به هم مي پيچيديم و يكي مي شديم يك خاطره ي بي رمق خواهد بود، گرچه من تو را درون خودم حمل خواهم كرد و تو مرا درون خودت با وجود آتش هايي كه خاموش مي شوند.

چشم هاي سنگي من از افق كشيده مي شوند، جايي كه نگاهم به آرامي مي نشيند در حاليكه صداي هزاران اوج بي قراري را از درونم بيرون مي آورند. تو فراي من باقي خواهي ماند در حال انديشه به اينكه قايم شدن زير سنگ هاي آتشفشاني سياه چه حسي خواهد داشت، و من به اين فكر مي كنم كه زخم هاي خورشيدي چه طعمي دارند.

تا آنموقع ما به سمت هم تنيده خواهيم شد: كلمه به كلمه.

سرور درابی

Sorour Darabi

The scene depicts the meeting of two amrads (handsome, beardless gay youth from the lower class in medieval Iranian tradition) in a hamam in Shiraz at the moment of the eclipse at the beginning of spring.

In the last days of winter, there’s only a short time before the first hints of Shiraz’s orange blossoms begin to scent the spring breeze. The radiant sun’s warmth will soon shine once again upon the wild hyacinth’s skin, and we will all become voyeurs of a lover’s touch as it first meets the body of his beloved.

As I enter the bathhouse, there may be two or four men present, yet their identities fade into insignificance. I am enraptured by the immense shaft of light streaming through the archway. It pierces the water-filled basin like a sharp spear, mingling with the turquoise steam rising from the tiles. The reflections from the mirrored tiles, intertwined with delicate rose petals on the arch’s edge, create an even more ethereal ambiance. It feels as though the world is poised for the arrival of a new deity, and the beams of light, like the spears of the world’s final battle, strike us in our naked vulnerability.

The murmur and echo of sounds are so vividly mirrored in this scene that one becomes disoriented, unsure whether they are seeing or hearing the sounds.

Abruptly, the light, like a spear returned to its sheath-withdraws, leaving the space in darkness. Mist rises from the warmth of the bathhouse, and an emptiness stretches as far as the eye can see, as if the world were suspended before its creation. Surrounded by darkness and steam, a delicate face emerges. It feels as though the ground has opened beneath my feet, gravity pulling all my blood downward and drawing me into itself. I tumble from one darkness into another, as though falling through two dark tunnels that merge, intensifying my fear that they may have no end. From the darkness of the day into the darkness of his eyes, in which I am unsure how long I’ve been entranced. The twists and turns of his hair, delineated by the steam of the bathhouse, become the winding paths of this tunnel. Trapped in these winding twists, darkness within darkness, eternal abyss.

Suddenly, the blazing spear of the sun, now aimed between his legs, streams from the pleasing curve of his buttocks into my face and into the bathwater. The heat is so intense that it feels as though the water has been distilled from our entwined bodies. As if someone has granted us a new life, at that moment, a dense, white liquid, like the first mother’s milk after birth, bubbles on my lips.

در آخرین روزهای زمستان، چیزی تا عطر پراکنی اولین شکوفه های بهار نارنج شیراز در نسیم بهاری نمانده است. گرمای تابش خورشید به زودی دوباره بر پوست سنبل وحشی خواهد تابید و همه ما ناظران اولین لمس او بر بدن محبوبش خواهیم شد.

وقتی وارد حمام می شوم ،شگفت زدگی از حجم عظیم نوری که از زیر قوس طاق که به درون خزینه میتابد ، حضور دو یا چهار مرد را در نظرم به بی اهمیتی میراند. این نور مانند یک نیزه تیز به درون خزینه پر آب نفوذ میکند و با بخار فیروزه ای که از کاشی کاری ها بر می خیزد ترکیب میشود. انعکاس نور از ایینه ها با گل برگ های ظریف گل رزی که در لبه قوس طاق ترکیب شده اند، فضارا حتی متعالی تر می سازند.

به نظر میرسد که جهان آماده استقبال از خداوندگاری جدید است، و پرتو های نور مانند نیزه های آخرین نبرد جهان مارا در آسیب پذیری عریان

مان هدف قرار داده اند.

زمزمه و پژواک صدا ها در این صحنه به قدری زنده است که شخص دچار سردرگمی می شود و نمی داند آیا صدا ها را می بیند یا میشنود.

به طور ناگهانی نور، مانند نیزه ای که به غلافش باز میگردد، فضا را با تاریکی ترک می کند. مه از گرمای حمام برخواسته و خلع تا جایی که چشم میبیند گسترده میشود. گویی جهان پیش از آفرینش معلق مانده باشد. در میان سیاهی و بخار، چهره ای ظریف نمایان میشود، گویی که زمین زیر پایم باز شده باشد جاذبه تمام خونم را به پایین و به درون خود کشد. از تاریکی به تاریکی دگر سقوط میکنم. گویی از دو تونل تاریک که به هم میپیوندند پرتاب میشوم و ترس من از اینکه تاریکی انتهایی نداشته باشد، قوت میگیرد. از تاریکی روز ، به تاریکی چشمانش، که نمیدانم چه مدت است که در آنها محو شده ام. پیچ و خم موهایش، در بخار آب، برجسته تر شده اند، به مسیر های پر پیچ و خم این تونل تبدیل میشوند. در این پیچش های در هم پیچیده ، تاریکی در پس تاریکی ، پرتگاه ابدی.

Tonight, the moon is in love, melting, burning to bear a new light.

Sun withholds sometimes.

My voice intercourses voids, my tears, rivers.

که عمیق ترین خواسته ام هست گم شدن در چشمانت

In the realm of dreams

I have to stop being silly, she probably won’t even notice my new hair since Khanoom Farokh made sure every inch of my skin and hair is covered!

Goli is sitting under a large tree, on a gilim, a patterned carpet just large enough to contain her young frame, she looks up to the morning blue sky,

She’s probably right anyhow, the sun always burns me first, it would have darkened my skin even more, and Agha Ahmad would have gotten irritated again. Besides, I certainly don’t want Haj Khanoom scrubbing my body over and over at the hamam. You’d think she’d learn by now that my skin won’t get lighter with more scrubbing.

The clanking of silverware beckons Goli to look across her shoulder,

They brought all the silver to the park again- her eyes counting, no less than 3 samovars, perhaps Agha Mohsen and his wives, concubines and children will be joining us today, then spotting the four-year-old boy, overdressed as usual, stomping around causing the trays lined up under trees carrying empty glasses to tremble. He is in tears, his arms up as if summoning the skies,

Where is maman Sooski! Maman sooski! I want my maman sooski!

Hossein agha, why is agha Morteza so upset? Goli asks, scooping pomegranate seeds from a copper bowl Uma arranged earlier for her, the only concubine.

Hossein agha is busy balancing a tray of two cups of tea, sugar, pistachio delicacies and other sweets,

Well, we all know he is crying for his Khaleh Sooski of course!

Goli looks around, where is Uma- she hates calling her Sooski for she is too beautiful to carry the moniker of a roach. She looks across at the carriage parked,

She must still be busy bringing the rest of the silver out which means Agha Mohsen is definitely coming today … I no longer know how to dodge his uncontrollable hands, especially after the wine has been poured.

A soft laughter diverts her attention, she looks ahead of her, thinking,

From behind, Khanoom Farokh and Agha Ahmad look like the happiest couple in Isfahan, no one in town would believe that they haven’t seen each other for months.

The gilim the couple is sitting on is much larger, copper bowls brimmed with grapes and sliced watermelons, the hookah lit with fresh coal and the teacups needing a refill. Hossein agha is already here, excusing his interruption in one of the languages of the Caucasus.

As he swaps the cups for filled ones, Goli notices Khanoom Farokh is sitting on the braided hair peeking out of her white buttoned scarf,

After she’s demanded I braid her hair as tiny as mine, she is sitting on it…I am sure she will have me braid her whole head again tomorrow… Luckily, he’s back at sea next week already.

She looks at Khanoom trying to reach for his hand resting on the gilim as he lifts it up to pull on the hookah,

Well at least for now, she is living her French romance before everyone else arrives.

Morteza barges in this almost perfect French inspired scene, howling but it’s agha Ahmad’s voice now looking in Goli’s direction, that brings her thoughts back to reality. He is calling for Uma, Goli looks back at Uma and Hossein Agha, arranging fruits in more bowls.

Haji Sooski! Why would you let my son cry his eyes out?! Don’t they know in Africa that children need their nannies more than their mothers?? His cone shaped hat always shakes a little when he gets animated.

Uma picks up the crying boy into her arms who pulls some hair out of the scarf which slips back letting her cornrows peek,

She is always so beautiful.

Uma tugs her scarf up with one hand and tightens it from under her neck with Morteza now cradled around her waist. She rushes past Goli, the hem of her large brown dress almost flirting with Goli’s small lace parasol.

Come on Goli, look!

Goli snaps her eyes closed, suddenly turns back and takes the sight of Uma who’s now placed the boy on a larger gilim surrounded by silver serving platters and the samovars, she hands the boy a branch of grapes. To Goli, it’s always been evident,

How I wish I could meet you in the garden later tonight…

And then, as if Uma had heard Goli’s thought, she turns, their eyes meeting for an instant, before,

Goliiiiiii, are you deaf or stupid?

Pulled out of her daydream, she hurriedly gets up, quickening her pace to Khanoom Farokh.

Yes Khanoom, she almost whispers to herself, her eyes staring at the grass, her knees bending slightly- she knows better than to be seen more than it is necessary.

She notices Agha Ahmad’s mark in lieu of an empty space on the gilim, Khanoom Farokh glances at Goli’s parasol, chuckling,

Must you always carry accessories Goli?

I am sorry Khanoom, Goli answers, bending to help Khanoom Farokh stand up

Well, hurry! Will you? Agha Ahmad wants us both to accompany him on a walk. Goli places the red slippers in front of Khanoom Farokh who slides her feet in, ironing out her fluffy long skirt.

Agha Ahmad’s silhouette at anchor, his arms crossed behind his back, a tasbiah dangling from his hands.

As the women scurry forward, Kahnoom Farokh’s chuckle grows louder, You are looking like the flower we named you to be with this umbrella! She laughs.

And you are looking beautiful Khanoom Farokh as always. Goli tightens her grip on the small parasol.

Khanoom Farokh now barely manages in between laughter,

And you are looking like some sort of royalty…that we found at the bazaar on sale actually!

Her laugh louder causing her to stop to contain balance over her wobbly legs, she places her arms on her stomach, over her dragon illustrated dress Agha Ahmad got her from his recent travels to China.

Goli steals one last glance at Uma from a distance,

We can try and remember the places we are from, Uma; trade the few words we are managing to safeguard. And maybe one day I will find the courage to hold your braids in between my fingers and glance longer at your beautiful dark skin that reminds me of home. Will you allow me? Me, the concubine to Agha Ahmad? Will you believe in my love for you, Uma?

Goli’s body is propelled forward,

Agha Ahmad is expectantly standing, looking at Khanoom Farokh through his large brows carved in Vs,

What is all this noise about Farokh?

He steals a quick glance at Goli, whose eyes are glued down, as Khanoom Farokh barely has time to recount that Agha Ahmad loudly clears his throat, resuming his walk.

Khanoom quickly follows as Goli trails behind, her parasol up, daring one last look at her undeclared lover,

Until I see you, Uma, beyond the realm of dreams.

She turns.

در قلمروي روياها

"بايد دست از حماقت بردارم، او احتمالا متوجه مدل موي جديدم نخواهد شد از آنجا كه فرخ خانم حواسش جمع بود كه سانت به سانت پوست و موي من پوشيده باشد."

گلي زير يك درخت بزرگ نشسته، روي يك گليم، يك فرش طرح دار كه فقط به اندازه ي بدن جوانش جا دارد، او به آسمان آبي صبح نگاه مي كند.

"احتمالا حق با اوست، خورشيد هميشه اول مرا مي سوزاند، پوستم حتي تيره تر خواهد شد، و احمد آقا دوباره اعصابش خرد می شود. بعلاوه، من قطعا نمي خواهم كه حاج خانم مدام پوستم را در حمام بسابد. آدم فكر مي كند كه ديگر تا الان بايد فهميده باشد كه پوست من با ساييدن روشن تر نمي شود."

صداي سرويس نقره باعث مي شود كه گلي پشت سرش را نگاه كند.

دوباره تمام نقره را به پارك آوردند – با چشمانش مي شمرد، بيشتر از سه سماور، شايد آقا محسن و زن هايش، صيغه ها و فرزندانش امروز به ما ملحق شوند، سپس پسر چهارساله را مي بيند، مثل هميشه بيش از حد تيپ زده، قدم هاي محكمش باعث مي شود كه ليوان هاي خالي روي سيني هاي زير درختان بلرزند. پسر اشك آلود است، بازوهایش در هوا گويي مي خواهد آسمان را صدا كند.

"مامان سوسكي كجاست! مامان سوسكي! من مامان سوسكيمو مي خوام!"

"حسين آقا، چرا آقا مرتضي انقدر ناراحته؟" گلي مي پرسد، در حاليكه دانه هاي انار را از يك كاسه ي مسي كه اوما، تنها صيغه، برايش درست كرده بود برمي دارد.

حسين آقا مشغول بالانس كردن يك سيني با دو فنجان چاي، شكر، و شيريني هاي پسته اي است.

"خب، همه مون مي دونيم كه اون داره واسه خاله سوسكيش گريه مي كنه!"

گلي به اطراف نگاه مي كند، اوما كجاست؟ او از اينكه او را "سوسكي" صدا كند متنفر است، زيرا اوما زيادي براي سوسك بودن زيباست.

"احتمالا داره بقيه ي سرويس نقره رو بيرون مياره كه يعني آقا محسن امروز حتما مياد… ديگه نميدونم چطوري از دست هاي غير قابل كنترلش دوري كنم، بخصوص بعد از سرو شراب."

خنده ي آرامي توجه اش را جلب مي كند، به مقابلش نگاه مي كند و فكر مي كند،

"از پشت، فرخ خانم و احمد آقا شبيه خوشبخت ترين زوج در اصفهان هستند، هيچكس باورش نميشه كه ماه هاست يكديگر را نديده اند."

گليمي كه اين زوج رويش نشسته اند بسيار بزرگ تر است، و كاسه هاي مسي مملو از انگور و هندوانه ي قاچ شده است، قليان را با ذغال تازه چاق كرده اند و فنجان هاي چاي دوباره بايد پر شوند. حسين آقا از الان اينجاست، و با يكي از زبان هاي قفقازي معذرت خواهي مي كند.

درحاليكه فنجان خالي اش را با يك فنجان پر عوض مي كند، گلي متوجه مي شود كه فرخ خانم روي موي بافته شده اي كه از روسري سنجاق سفيدش زده بيرون نشسته است.

"بعد ازاينكه منو مجبور كرد كه موهاش رو مثل موهاي خودم ريز ببافم، روش نشسته… مطمئنم كه فردا هم منو وادار مي كنه كه كل سرش رو ببافم… خوشبختانه، هفته ي ديگه به دريا برمي گرده."

او به خانم نگاه مي كند كه سعي مي كند دستش را كه روي گليم است بگيرد درحاليكه مرد دستش رو بلند مي كند كه قليان را چاق كند،

"خب حداقل اون الان داره عشق فرانسوي شو زندگي مي كنه قبل از اينكه بقيه برسند."

مرتضي خودش را مي اندازد وسط اين تصوير تقريبا الهام گرفته از فرانسه، در حال زوزه كشيدن اما الان اين صداي احمد آقاست كه به طرف گلي نگاه مي كند، و از خيال پردازي بيرونش مي آورد. او اوما را صدا مي زند، گلي برميگردد و به اوما و حسين آقا نگاه مي كند، در حاليكه ميوه ها را در كاسه ها مي چيند.

"حاجي سوسكي! براي چي اجازه دادي پسرم به هق هق بيفته؟! تو آفريقا نمي دونن كه بچه ها به دايه شون بيشتر از مادرشون نياز دارن؟؟" كلاه قيفي اش كمي مي لرزد هر بار كه خودش را تكان مي دهد.

اوما پسر گريان را در آغوش مي گيرد، و پسر چند تار از زير روسري اش مي كشد، روسري عقب مي رود و بافت هاي اوما عيان مي شود.

"او هميشه بسيار زيباست."

اوما روسري اش را با يك دست جلو مي كشد و زير گلويش سفت گره مي زند با مرتضايي كه الان دور كمرش حلقه زده است. او با عجله از كنار گلي عبور مي كند، پايين پيراهن قهوه اي بزرگش با چتر كوچك گلي لاس مي زند.

"يالا گلي، نگاه كن!"

گلي چشمانش را سريع مي بندد، ناگهان برميگردد و اوما را مي بيند كه الان پسر را روي گليم بزرگ گذاشته و اطرافش پر از ديس هاي نقره و سماور است، او به پسر يك خوشه انگور مي دهد. براي گلي، هميشه واضح بوده است.

"آرزو مي كنم كه امشب ديروقت در باغ مي توانستيم قرار بگذاريم…"

و اوما انگار كه فكر گلي را بشنود، سرش را مي چرخاند، براي يك لحظه چشمانشان در هم قفل مي شود. تا اينكه صداي "گلييييييي، تو كري يا احمق؟" مي آيد.

از خيال پردازي اش بيرون كشيده مي شود، سريع بلند مي شود، و به سمت فرخ خانم مي شتابد.

"بله، خانم،" او تقريبا با خودش زمزمه مي كند، چشمانش به چمن خيره مي شوند، زانوانش اندكي خم – او خوب مي داند كه هر چه كمتر ديده شود، بهتر است.

بجاي يك جاي خالي در گليم، او نشان احمد آقا را مي بيند، فرخ خانم به چتر گلي نگاه مي كند و مي خندد، "گلي، آيا هميشه بايد زيورآلات با خودت حمل كني؟"

"من متأسفم، خانم،" گلي پاسخ مي دهد، در حاليكه خم مي شود كه به فرخ خانم كمك كند بايستد.

"خب، زود باش! احمد آقا ميخواد هر دوي ما همراهي اش كنيم."

گلي دمپايي هاي قرمز را جلوي فرخ خانم مي گذارد، او دمپايي ها را مي پوشد، و دامن پرزدار و بلندش را صاف مي كند.

سايه ي احمد آقا لنگر مي اندازد، دستانش پشت کمرش است و يك تسبيح از آنها آویزان است.

هر چه زن ها جلوتر مي روند، قهقهه ي فرخ خانم بلند تر مي شود.

"با اين چتر مثل اسمت شبيه يه گل شدي!"

او مي خندد.

"شما هم مثل هميشه زيبا هستين، فرخ خانم." گلي مشتش را محكم تر دور چتر كوچكش گره مي كند.

فرخ خانم از شدت خنده نمي تواند خودش را كنترل كند.

"و تو شبيه يك آنتيك هستي… كه ما در حراج بازار پيدا كرديم!"

خنده اش انقدر بلند مي شود كه تقريبا كنترل پاهايش را از دست مي دهد، بازوانش را روي شكمش مي گذارد، روي پيراهن طرح اژدهايش كه اخيرا احمد آقا از چين برايش آورده است.

گلي از دور يواشكي نگاه آخر را به اوما مي اندازد،

"ما مي توانيم سعي كنيم و به ياد بياوريم مكان هايي را كه از آنجا هستيم، اوما؛ چند كلمه اي كه توانستيم نگه داريم را با هم قسمت كنيم. و شايد يك روز من شجاعت اين را پيدا كنم كه بافت هايت را بين انگشتانم بگيرم و به مدت طولاني تري به پوست زيباي تيره ات كه مرا ياد خانه مي اندازد، نگاه كنم. آيا به من اجازه خواهي داد؟ من، صيغه ي احمد آقا؟ آيا عشق من به خودت را باور خواهي كرد، اوما؟"

بدن گلي به سمت جلو كشيده مي شود.

احمد آقا با حالتي منتظر ايستاده است، در حاليكه از لاي ابروهايش كه مثل ٧ تراشيده شده اند به فرخ خانم نگاه مي كند،

"فرخ، اين همه سر و صدا واسه چيه؟"

او سريع و يواشكي به گلي نگاه مي كند، كه دارد پايين را نگاه مي كند، و فرخ خانم وقتي براي توضيح ندارد، احمد آقا گلويش را صاف مي كند و پياده روي اش را شروع مي كند.

خانم سريع دنبالش مي كند در حاليكه گلي با چترش پشتش است، و به خودش جرأت مي دهد كه به عشق ناگفته اش يه نگاه ديگر بيندازد،

"تا وقتي كه ببينمت، اوما، فراي قلمروي روياها."

او بر مي گردد.

طاهره قرة العين

Poem by Tahirih

Tahirih Qurrat al-ʿAyn
1814 or 1817- 1852

Tahirih was a poet, women’s rights activist and theologian of the Babi faith, a minority faith started in Iran. She openly denounced polygamy and the compulsory hijab. She is known to be one of the first women to publicly remove her veil during a public speech. After several years spent under home arrest for her activism and religion, she was executed at the age of 35 by the order of Naser al-Din Shah, who had previously proposed marriage to her, which she famously rejected in the form of a poem. She was strangled by an officer of the government with her own veil which she had chosen for her anticipated martyrdom. Her last words being "You can kill me as soon as you like, but you cannot stop the emancipation of women.” She was buried in an unmarked grave.

طاهره شاعر، فعال حقوق زنان و متکلم مذهب باب بود. او بر زد تعدد زوجات و حجاب اجباری را محکوم کرد. او یکی از اولین زنانی است که در یک سخنرانی عمومی حجاب خود را در ملاء عام برداشت. وی پس از چندین سال حبس خانگی به دلیل فعالیت و مذهب خویش، در سن سی و پنج سالگی به دستور ناصرالدین شاه که قبلاً به او پیشنهاد ازدواج داده بود، که معروف است که در قالب شعر این پیشنهاد را رد کرد، اعدام شد. او توسط یکی از افسران حکومت با حجابی که برای شهادت مورد انتظارش انتخاب کرده بود خفه شد و در یک قبر بی نشان دفن شد. آخرین سخن او این بود: "شما می توانید به محض اینکه دوست دارید من را بکشید، اما نمی توانید جلوی رهایی زنان را بگیرید."

شعر از طاهره:

اگر به باد دهم زلف عنبر آسا را

اسیر خویش کنم آهوان صحرا را

وگر به نرگس شهلای خویش سرمه کشم

به روز تیره نشانم تمام دنیا را

برای دیدن رویم سپهر هر دم صبح

برون بر آورد آئینه مطلّا را

گزار من به کلیسا اگر فتد روزی

بدین خویش برم دختران ترسا را

If I give up my hair to the amber wind

I will capture the deer of the desert

If I paint my dark narcissus eyes with kohl

I will bring darkness onto the whole world

To see my face each morning,

The sky brings out its golden mirror,

If I end up at church one day,

I will lead fearsome girls to my own religion

Vows of Sisterhood

A series of three sculptures based on the rituals of the same name, a temporary marriage between two women. These rituals took place in Iran and were popular before the country was further modernised under western influence. In order to propose this ritual, one woman gifted a tray of items to another. On the tray would have been a dildo made of wax, sweets and other offerings. They would then travel to a shrine and exchange vows. These rituals gave two women the right to travel, spend nights together and even live together. Some of these women would leave their husbands for one another, a practice made possible by the fact that this ritual was approved by religious authorities.

Vows of Sisterhood represents a relic of the past, present and future, re-imagining what the tray may have looked like today if the ritual still existed, and was celebrated instead of being erased from history. First made by hand from clay, the sculpture pays homage to the history of the handmade gift tray. It was then 3D scanned, digitally animated and 3D printed.

سوگندهاي خواهر خواندگی

مجموعه اي از مجسمه ها بر اساس مراسمي به نام صیقه خواهرخواندگی. اين مراسم در ايران رخ مي داد و محبوب هم بود قبل از اينكه كشور تحت تأثير غرب مدرنيزه شود. براي درخواست اين مراسم، يك زن يك سيني مخلفات به ديگري هديه مي داد. روي سيني يك ديلدو از جنس موم، شيريني، و هديه هاي ديگري بود. سپس آن ها به آرامگاه مي رفتند و سوگند مي خوردند. اين مراسم به دو زن حق سفر مي داد، شب ها را با هم بگذرانند و حتي با هم زندگي كنند. بعضي از اين زن ها شوهرشان را براي يكديگر ترك مي كردند، كاري كه امكانش به دليل تأييد شدن از طرف مقامات مذهبي وجود داشت.

سوگندهاي خواهر خواهي بقاياي تاريخي گذشته، حال، و آينده را نشان مي دهد، در حاليكه مجسم مي كند كه آن سيني امروز چه شكلي بود اگر كه اين مراسم هنوز وجود داشت، و جشن گرفته مي شد بجاي اينكه از تاريخ حذف مي شد. اين مجسمه اول با دست از سفال درست شد، به احترام تاريخ كادوي دست ساز سيني. سپس اسكن سه بعدي شد، انيميشن ديجيتال و چاپ سه بعدي شد.

Shrine

The shrine continues to pay homage to the Vows of Sisterhood, and the shrines women would travel to. The design of the shrine utilises Islamic geometric patterns from Iran, inspired by mosques in Esfahan, and motifs and drawings from 19th Century art. The patterns are laser-cut in stainless steel, a material that has historically been used for the making of shrines in Iran.

آرامگاه

اين آرامگاه همچنان به سوگندهاي خواهرخواهي احترام مي گذارد. طرح آرامگاه از نقش هاي هندسي اسلامي، الهام گرفته از مساجد اصفهان، و موتيف و نقاشي هاي هنر قرن نوزدهم از ايران استفاده مي كند. طرح ها با فولاد ضد زنگ برش ليزري خورده اند، ماده اي كه بصورت تاريخي براي ساخت آرامگاه ها در ايران استفاده مي شده است
